Tree Roots: Sewer Line Invaders

Tree roots can potentially damage major sewer lines. If a crack in a sewer line occurs, roots will then creep into them and grow to be very large. This will ultimately cause a myriad of problems that will affect the sewer line and surrounding properties. If this happens, you can of course call the Cesspool Pros and have us remedy the issue. We can clean out your sewer lines by one of these surefire methods.

1. Mechanically Cutting Tree Roots

The use of a mechanical auger is probably the most common method to cut tree roots.  The head of the auger has teeth on it much like a reciprocating saw blade. The auger is sent down the sewer, where the rotating action will cut the roots.  However, debris will likely remain in the sewer line.  This method is effective in solving the problem, but only temporarily.  Afterwards, the roots will likely grow back.

2. Chemical Tree Root Removal

First and foremost, the tree roots are cut out of the sewer line, but some debris may remain.  Of course you don’t want the problem to start all over again, so you must pour a chemical agent down the line to kill and remove all remaining debris. Sulfate crystals or RootX are two popular methods for draining sewer lines.

3. How To Kill Tree Roots With A Hydro-jetter

A hydro-jetter is a powerful drain cleaning machine that uses high-pressure water jets to clear obstructions in residential and commercial drain pipes. In addition to residential sewers, hydro-jetters can be used in larger municipal sewer systems. This method is highly effective, however it can be potentially expensive. Next, the sewer line will be flushed with a chemical to kill any remaining roots or debris.

4. Digging Up Roots

Regrettably, invasive tree roots may have permanently damaged the sewer line.  If this is the case, the entire line, as well as the roots, will be dug up so a new sewer line can be installed.
